At the UNDP Executive Board meeting, Jonathan Shrier, U.S. Deputy Representative to ECOSOC, stated the importance of transparency and local leadership in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking just before the UN General Assembly High-Level Week and the Summit of the Future, Shrier emphasized UNDP’s role in addressing global challenges through efficient and accountable aid strategies.
In his address, Shrier lauded UNDP Administrator Steiner’s commitment to transparency and effective oversight.
He highlighted the necessity of maximizing development outcomes amid unprecedented humanitarian needs and resource constraints. Shrier stressed that investment in oversight should enhance, not hinder, effective program delivery.
Shrier also praised UNDP’s dedication to a portfolio approach that emphasizes locally-led development, which includes meaningful civil society representation.
He requested further details on how UNDP plans to track and evaluate the effectiveness of this approach.
Additionally, Shrier reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms, stating that these principles are central to the UN’s mission and the SDGs. He welcomed UNDP’s alignment with the UN Secretariat’s LGBTQI+ strategy and sought information on its implementation plans.
The meeting highlighted the urgent need for coordinated international efforts and transparent practices to address global challenges and advance sustainable development.
