The United States has conveyed its disappointment regarding the recent vote outcome on the renewal of Mali’s sanctions regime. Criticising Russia’s influence, the U.S. highlighted that despite opposition from regional nations, Russia managed to impose its decisions on the Council.
This turn of events, driven by Russia’s actions, is viewed as a threat not only to Mali’s peace and security but to the entire region.
The U.S. clarified its affirmative vote for the resolution, emphasising the significance of the Panel of Experts’ reports as a vital information source about the Mali situation. The travel ban and asset freeze measures were deemed essential to counteract illegal financial activities and unjust gains, which have implications not only for Mali but for the broader region encompassing various negative actors. The ongoing violence’s impact on countless individuals remains a pressing concern.
Lamenting that, due to Russia’s actions, the Council has been unable to renew crucial international initiatives to address the crisis effectively. It underscored the continued relevance of the resolution’s provisions in upholding peace and security in Mali.
The U.S. pledged its commitment to collaborate constructively with fellow Security Council members to devise a renewed mandate that accurately reflects the dire ground situation and fulfils the Council’s primary responsibility of maintaining global peace and security.
