Tyla, a South African singer, made history at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards, securing three prestigious awards: Best R&B, Best African Act, and Best Afrobeats.
In the highly contested Best Afrobeats category, Tyla outshone Nigerian music heavyweights Ayra Starr, Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, and Tems.
Tyla also claimed the Best African Act award, edging out Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz. Unfortunately, Ayra Starr went home empty-handed, losing all four nominations for Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats, and Best Push.
Global superstar Taylor Swift dominated the night, winning four awards: Best US Act, Best Video, Best Artist, and Best Live.
The ceremony, hosted by Rita Ora from Manchester, England, took a poignant moment to honor the late One Direction singer Payne, who tragically passed away last month at 31 after falling from a balcony in Argentina.
