Tragic One As Man Commits Suicide In Imo Over Economic Struggles And Family Neglect.

A heartbreaking incident has left the Amakpu Okuku community in Owerri West, Imo State, reeling after a middle-aged man, identified only as Odomma, took his own life in an uncompleted building near his home on Friday, 22 August 2025. The father of four, believed to be in his 50s, reportedly succumbed to the weight of prolonged financial hardship and alleged neglect by his family, according to local reports.

Odomma, who earned a living selling water in jerry cans and buckets, had been grappling with severe economic challenges that left him unable to provide for his household. Community members revealed that he had openly expressed his despair, lamenting that his wife and children had stopped providing him with food due to his financial struggles. A local resident, Ikenna, shared that Odomma had previously threatened to end his life, stating, “He said if things didn’t improve, he would take his life to end the misery.” Despite advice to seek help from the village head, Odomma tragically followed through with his threats.

The discovery of his body, found hanging in the early hours of Friday, drew scores of residents to the scene, many capturing the grim moment on their phones. Once known for his affordable water supply, Odomma had become visibly distressed in recent months, with villagers noting his increasing isolation. The Imo State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, stated efforts were underway to confirm the incident with the Owerri West Divisional Police Officer, though further updates were unavailable at the time.

This tragedy has sparked conversations about the broader economic pressures facing many Nigerians, with rising costs of living and unemployment exacerbating mental health challenges. Social media posts on X reflect public shock and calls for greater community support to address such crises. Authorities and local leaders are now urging residents to report signs of distress, emphasising the need for collective action to prevent similar tragedies.
