Military troops from the 181 Amphibious Battalion stationed in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State fell victim to a brutal ambush while on a peacekeeping mission in the troubled Okuama community.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, March 14, 2024, marks a grim escalation in the ongoing communal crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State.
According to reports, the troops had responded to a distress call stemming from the simmering conflict between the two communities.
However, upon arrival, they were swiftly surrounded by a group of hostile youths from the Okuama community, resulting in a fatal confrontation.
Tragically, the attack claimed the lives of several military personnel, including the Commanding Officer and high-ranking officers. Among the casualties were two Majors, one Captain, and twelve soldiers, highlighting the severity of the ambush and the grave risks faced by those serving on peacekeeping duties.
In response to the heinous crime, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has issued a directive for an immediate investigation into the incident.
The CDS has vowed to ensure that those responsible for the attack are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. Additionally, the Delta State Government has been notified of the tragic events unfolding in the region.
Despite the devastating loss, the military remains resolute in its commitment to upholding peace and security across the nation.
