Tinubu Pays Tribute To Late Awujale For Role In June 12 Struggle And 2023 Election Victory.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, for his significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and his personal success in the 2023 presidential election. Speaking at the 8th Day Fidau prayer held in honour of the revered monarch at Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Tinubu described the late Awujale as a towering figure whose wisdom and courage left an indelible mark on the Yoruba race and Nigeria as a whole.

The President reflected on Oba Adetona’s steadfast support during the struggle to restore the mandate of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely believed to have been won by MKO Abiola. Tinubu recalled the monarch’s resolute encouragement during the protests against the annulment, noting his unwavering commitment to justice and democracy. “He was there in times of need for all of us. Baba was steadfast, resolute, and very encouraging,” Tinubu said, emphasising the Awujale’s role as a moral compass during a critical period in Nigeria’s history.

Tinubu also shared a personal anecdote from the build-up to the 2023 election, revealing how the late monarch’s blessings bolstered his campaign. “I went to him, and he blessed me, saying, ‘You will win that election, and you will win one more time. Go ahead.’ Our history would not have been complete, carefully and richly, if I had failed in the last election,” the President remarked. He attributed part of his victory, which saw him secure 8.79 million votes to become Nigeria’s 16th president, to the spiritual and moral support of the Awujale.

Oba Adetona, who passed away on 13 July 2025 at the age of 91, was celebrated for his 65-year reign, marked by reforms and prosperity in Ijebuland. Tinubu praised the monarch’s integrity, describing him as “very honest, bold, and truthful,” and a leader who brought dignity and honour to the Yoruba race. The President called on Nigerians, particularly the people of Ijebuland, to uphold the values of unity and peace championed by the late ruler.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, also in attendance, echoed Tinubu’s sentiments, describing the Awujale as a distinguished monarch whose reign fostered development and religious harmony. “He was a bridge between our cherished past and the future, upholding the dignity of Ijebuland while championing modern values,” Abiodun said. He urged residents to honour the monarch’s legacy by remaining peaceful and united.

The Fidau prayer was attended by prominent figures, including the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, governors from Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Kwara states, as well as former governors, traditional rulers, and National Assembly members. Tinubu expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun, whom he fondly referred to as the “Okanlomo Eleyi of Ogun State,” for his role in organising the burial rites.

In closing, the President prayed for the repose of Oba Adetona’s soul, saying, “May Almighty Allah grant him Aljanah Firdaus.” The event served as a poignant reminder of the late monarch’s enduring legacy as a custodian of culture, a reformer, and a steadfast ally in Nigeria’s democratic struggles.
