Tinubu Fitter Than Most Global Leaders, Says Presidential Aide Bwala.
President Bola Tinubu is “physically fitter than most presidents in developed countries,” according to his Special Adviser on Public Communications and Media, Daniel Bwala. The statement, made during an interview with DW Africa, comes amid speculation about Tinubu’s health due to his frequent medical trips abroad and growing endorsements for his re-election bid in 2027.
Bwala’s assertion aims to dispel concerns about the 73-year-old president’s fitness, highlighting his resilience and capability to lead Nigeria. “In fact, the president of Nigeria physically is fitter than most presidents in the advanced countries,” he declared, addressing questions about Tinubu’s health during his tenure. The aide’s comments follow a period of public scrutiny, particularly after a false claim by a TikTok user alleging Tinubu’s death, which led to the individual’s arrest by the Department of State Services.
The presidential spokesperson also defended early endorsements for Tinubu’s second term, describing them as part of the All Progressives Congress (APC) tradition of mid-term assessments. “It’s a procedure within our party that there will be a mid-term assessment,” Bwala explained, noting that Tinubu had “passed with distinction.” He expressed confidence in the administration’s support base, stating, “We are absolutely confident ahead of 2027 that we have the support of our people.”
Bwala highlighted key achievements of Tinubu’s administration, including the introduction of local government autonomy, which he described as a milestone in deepening democracy. This policy has empowered local government leaders with greater resources, enabling states to recruit vigilantes and procure equipment for surveillance and law enforcement. Additionally, Bwala pointed to improvements in healthcare and food access, such as free caesarean sections for mothers and a rice policy ensuring affordability of the staple food across Nigeria. “We also have subsidies on certain prescription drugs for people at the local level,” he added.
The endorsement of Tinubu’s leadership was further bolstered by the Emir of Daura, who recently praised the president’s conduct during the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, citing it as a reason for supporting his re-election. The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, led a delegation to condole the Daura Emirate, reinforcing political unity.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, Bwala’s remarks underscore the administration’s focus on showcasing its achievements and Tinubu’s personal vigour. With ongoing reforms and public endorsements, the president’s team is positioning him as a robust leader ready to steer Nigeria forward.
