In the face of looming legislative action in the United States threatening to ban TikTok within nine months unless it is sold, CEO Shou Zi Chew has issued a resolute response.
The Chinese-owned social media platform has been at the centre of political debates, with President Joe Biden recently signing a foreign aid package that could see TikTok ousted from American soil if not divested within the specified timeframe.
Speaking directly to users via a video message shared on the platform, Chew reassured them that TikTok isn’t going anywhere. He categorically labelled the new law as political manoeuvring, emphasising, “Make no mistake, this is a ban, a ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice. Politicians may say otherwise. But don’t get confused.”
Chew highlighted the irony in the situation, pointing out that TikTok’s platform embodies the values of freedom of expression synonymous with American ideals. He stressed that TikTok provides everyday Americans with a potent avenue to express themselves and be heard.
In a show of determination, Chew pledged to fight for users’ rights through legal channels. Referring to the ongoing legal battles, he asserted, “We will keep fighting for your rights in the courts. The facts and the Constitution are on our side and we expect to prevail.”
TikTok’s resilience in the face of political pressure isn’t new. The platform successfully navigated a legal challenge against former President Donald Trump’s executive order in 2020, which aimed to force its sale within 45 days. Despite the uncertainty ahead, TikTok remains steadfast in its commitment to defending its presence and users’ freedoms in the United States.
