Naomi Osaka Triumphs in Italian Open Return, Sets Sights on Marta Kostyuk
Naomi Osaka, the former world number one, made a triumphant return to the Italian Open with a straight-set victory over France’s Clara Burel in the first round.
Osaka’s appearance at the tournament marked her first since 2021, showcasing her prowess on the clay courts.
In a commanding performance, Osaka secured a 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 victory against Burel, who holds the 45th rank globally. Notably, this win marked Osaka’s first triumph against a top-50 opponent on clay since her victory over Victoria Azarenka at the French Open in 2019.
The 26-year-old tennis star, who welcomed her first daughter last year, expressed her readiness for the upcoming challenges. She is set to face off against 19th seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in the second round on Thursday, anticipating another thrilling match.
Reflecting on her performance, Osaka highlighted her improvement in the second set and acknowledged the learning opportunities from her first-round encounter. With 27 winners, including eight aces, Osaka’s strategic gameplay and determination were evident throughout the 84-minute match.
Meanwhile, in the men’s competition, Britain’s Dan Evans faced disappointment as his first-round match against Italy’s Fabio Fognini was canceled due to inclement weather in Rome.
Despite the setback, Osaka’s stellar performance and positive mindset set the stage for an exciting journey ahead in the Italian Open, as she continues to showcase her resilience and skill on the tennis court.
