Coco Gauff Crowned 2025 Roland Garros Champion In Thrilling Final.

American tennis sensation Coco Gauff claimed her maiden Roland Garros title on Saturday, 7 June 2025, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a dramatic three-set battle, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4, at Court Philippe-Chatrier. The 21-year-old’s victory marks her second Grand Slam singles triumph, adding to her 2023 US Open crown, and establishes her as the first American woman to win the French Open since Serena Williams in 2015.

Gauff’s Road to the Final

Gauff, ranked No. 2 in the world, entered the 2025 Roland Garros tournament—held from 18 May to 8 June—as a strong contender on clay, following runner-up finishes in Madrid and Rome. Her journey to the final showcased her resilience and growth:

First Round: Defeated qualifier Olivia Gadecki in straight sets, a dominant start to her campaign.

Second Round: Overcame France’s Chloé Paquet with ease, 6-3, 6-4, despite home crowd support for her opponent.

Third Round: Breezed past No. 31 seed Anna Kalinskaya, 6-2, 6-4, maintaining her focus.

Fourth Round: Dispatched 20th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, 6-0, 7-5, dropping just five points in the opening set and sealing the match after a tight second set.

Quarterfinals: Faced a stern test in an all-American clash, rallying to beat No. 7 seed and Australian Open champion Madison Keys, 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-1, overcoming 10 double faults and a lost first set.

Semifinals: Ended the fairytale run of French wildcard Loïs Boisson (ranked No. 361) in a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory, silencing the partisan crowd with precise shotmaking and speed.

Gauff dropped only one set en route to the final—against Keys—demonstrating her consistency and adaptability on the challenging clay surface.

The Final: A Rollercoaster Triumph

In a blockbuster clash of the top two seeds, Gauff faced Aryna Sabalenka, with whom she shared a 5-5 head-to-head record. The windy conditions on Court Philippe-Chatrier led to an erratic match, with 15 breaks of serve and 100 unforced errors combined. Sabalenka surged to a 4-1 lead in the first set, but Gauff fought back to force a tiebreak. Despite trailing 5-3, Sabalenka clinched it 7-5 with her powerful game.

Undeterred, Gauff found her rhythm in the second set, capitalizing on Sabalenka’s 70 unforced errors across the match. She raced to a 4-1 lead with two breaks and sealed the set 6-2, levelling the contest. In the decider, Gauff broke early, but Sabalenka responded to tie it at 3-3. The American’s composure and defensive prowess shone through, as she held firm, breaking again and serving out the match 6-4 after two hours and 38 minutes. Dropping to the court in tears, Gauff celebrated a hard-fought victory, her first Roland Garros singles title.

Post-Match Reflections

“This win was harder than the first because you don’t want to get satisfied with just one,” Gauff told the crowd, referencing her 2023 US Open win over Sabalenka. “I was going through a lot of dark thoughts three years ago,” she added, recalling her 2022 final loss to Iga Świątek. “I’m just glad to be back here. Three finals… I guess I got the most important win.” Gauff thanked the French crowd, saying, “I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve such support, but I really appreciate it,” and quoted US rapper Tyler, The Creator: “If I ever told you I had a doubt inside me, I think I was lying.”

Historic Milestone

At 21, Gauff became the youngest American to win Roland Garros since Serena Williams in 2002 and the first since Williams’ 2015 triumph. This victory, her second major and 10th career singles title, complements her 2024 French Open doubles win with Katerina Siniaková. Gauff’s clay-court growth was evident, building on her 2022 runner-up finish and 2024 semifinal loss to Świątek. Her 75% first-serve win rate and ability to outlast Sabalenka in long rallies proved decisive.

Gauff’s 2025 Season

The Delray Beach, Florida native started 2025 strongly, going undefeated to help the US win the United Cup, including a straight-sets victory over Świątek. She reached the Australian Open quarterfinals (lost to Paula Badosa) and finals in Madrid and Rome. Her Roland Garros win cements her as world No. 2, a ranking she achieved on 10 June 2024, and positions her as a rising force, with 70 Grand Slam match wins, the most by a woman her age since Maria Sharapova in 2007.

Looking Ahead

With her speed, athleticism, and aggressive style, Gauff has proven she can compete with the best, defeating Sabalenka in two Grand Slam finals. As she hugged her parents, Candi and Corey, courtside, the 21-year-old signaled her intent to chase more titles. “I’m just glad to get another title to my résumé,” she said. “Hopefully another one next!” Paris has a new queen of clay, and Coco Gauff’s reign is just beginning.
