Team Nigeria Faces Setbacks In Paris 2024 Athletics Competition
Team Nigeria endured a challenging day at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, experiencing several setbacks in various events on Wednesday evening. Despite a promising start, with Oluwatobiloba Amusan smoothly advancing to the semi-finals of the women’s 100 metres hurdles, the day took a downturn with multiple losses across the athletics competition.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Ezekiel Nathaniel narrowly missed out on a spot in the final, finishing fifth in his semi-final with a time of 48.65 seconds. Similarly, Chudi Onwuzurike could not advance past the men’s 200m semi-finals, finishing seventh in his heat with a time of 20.72 seconds.
The women’s 400m event also saw disappointment, as Ella Onojuvwevwo finished sixth in her semi-final, clocking in at 51.05 seconds, which was not enough to secure a place in the final.
Adding to the day’s struggles, Samuel Ogazi finished seventh in the men’s 400m final, with a time of 44.73 seconds, rounding off a tough day for the Nigerian athletes on the track.
The challenges extended beyond the athletics events. In the quarterfinal of the women’s basketball competition, Nigeria’s D’Tigress fought valiantly but ultimately fell short against the defending champions, the USA, with a final score of 74-88.
Team Nigeria will continue their quest for medals on Thursday, with hopes pinned on the women’s 4x100m relay team as they compete in the first round. Despite the setbacks, the athletes remain determined to deliver strong performances in the remaining events.
