SWAN Commends Security Operatives For The Release Of Kidnapped Sports Journalists.
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has confirmed the release of several sports journalists who were abducted while travelling to cover the first leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between the Super Eagles and the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in Uyo.
In a press release issued by SWAN’s National Secretariat, the association’s president, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, expressed relief at the successful rescue of the journalists. SWAN had been in close contact with authorities since the journalists were kidnapped near the Anambra/Imo border. The prompt intervention of Nigerian security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army and Police, was crucial in securing the release of six of the abducted journalists.
The journalists, many of whom are camera and photojournalists, are either returning to their families or continuing with their professional duties. Efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining journalist still in captivity.
SWAN praised the security operatives for their swift and decisive action, which led to this positive outcome. The association also urged its members to remain calm and continue their duties without fear, while maintaining close communication with the leadership of their respective state chapters.
SWAN reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and safety of its members, assuring them of ongoing support and protection.
