A student at Ajayi Crowther University was brutally beaten to death by a group of students at the Shepherd Inn hostel, allegedly over a stolen mobile phone.
The tragic incident has led to the suspension and investigation of the hostel porter, whose identity remains undisclosed.
According to Femi Atoyebi, the university spokesperson, several students have been arrested and handed over to the police. However, the total number of those involved in the fatal beating is still unknown.
“For now, I think we have some, and those have been handed over to the police,” Atoyebi said during a telephone interview.
The identity of the deceased student has not been officially confirmed, although there are rumors that he might be Alex Timileyi, a prince from the Warri Kingdom of Delta State.
When questioned about this, Atoyebi stated, “By now, the school must have known the student. It’s not a secret. His status as a Prince, I don’t know. But to the best of my knowledge, he was a student of Ajayi Crowther University.”
The porter of the hostel, where the incident took place, has been suspended for dereliction of duty and is also assisting the police with their investigation.
A source within the university, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed harrowing details about the incident. The student was allegedly beaten continuously from 6 p.m. on Friday until he succumbed to his injuries at around 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The source added, “They said they caught him with a stolen phone. They started beating him from 6 p.m. yesterday (Friday) until he died at about 10 a.m. today (Saturday). They also shaved the hair of the guy before beating him.”
