Starmer Reaffirms UK’s Support For Ukraine In Meeting With Zelensky

Starmer Reaffirms UK’s Support For Ukraine In Meeting With Zelensky.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the United Kingdom’s unwavering support during a meeting at Downing Street. Starmer told Zelensky that he has the full backing across the United Kingdom, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to Ukraine amid ongoing diplomatic tensions.

Zelensky, who arrived in London after a contentious meeting with US President Donald Trump, expressed gratitude for Britain’s support, stating, I saw a lot of people and I want to thank you, the people of the United Kingdom, for such big support from the very beginning of this war.

UK Pledges £2.26bn Military Loan

During the meeting, Sir Keir and Zelensky signed a £2.26 billion loan to supply military equipment to Ukraine. The funds will be repaid using profits from frozen Russian assets, a move hailed by Zelensky as true justice – the one who started the war must be the one to pay.

The financial package, first announced in October, will be used to manufacture weapons in Ukraine, strengthening its ability to defend against Russian aggression.

Diplomatic Efforts Amid US Tensions

Following his meeting with Zelensky, Sir Keir spoke with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, underlining his role as a bridge between the US and Europe on security matters. The prime minister is set to host a European leaders’ summit in London on Sunday, focusing on efforts to end the war in Ukraine and enhance Europe’s defence capabilities.

The UK government also confirmed that Zelensky will meet King Charles III during his visit, a meeting reportedly requested by the Ukrainian president.

Challenges in Securing US Support

Zelensky’s visit to London follows an acrimonious White House meeting, where his discussions with Trump quickly escalated into a dispute. After the meeting, Zelensky acknowledged the tough dialogue, but insisted that Ukraine and the US remain strategic partners.

He reiterated Ukraine’s need for President Trump’s backing, stating, It’s crucial for us to have President Trump’s support. He wants to end the war, but no one wants peace more than we do.

Sunday’s European summit in London is expected to focus on strengthening Europe’s defence role as the US signals a reduced military commitment. European leaders, including those from France, Germany, and Poland, will discuss ways to support Ukraine, while NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will also be in attendance.

Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

While diplomatic efforts continue, fighting remains intense. Overnight, a drone attack on Kharkiv left seven people injured, prompting the evacuation of 64 patients from a fire-damaged medical facility. Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry reported intercepting 48 Ukrainian drones overnight.

As the war enters another critical phase, the UK’s continued support for Ukraine remains pivotal, with Sir Keir Starmer positioning Britain as a key player in the ongoing diplomatic and military efforts.
