Starmer Ready To Deploy UK Peacekeeping Troops In Ukraine, As Europe Intensifies Effort To Halt War With Russia.
As European leaders gather in Paris for emergency talks, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has declared his willingness to deploy British peacekeeping troops to Ukraine once the war ends.
Speaking ahead of the high-level meeting, Starmer affirmed the UK’s commitment to Ukraine’s security, stating: “I am willing to contribute to security guarantees to Ukraine by putting our own troops on the ground if necessary.”
Europe Rallies Amid Ongoing Conflict
The emergency discussions in Paris, led by French President Emmanuel Macron, aim to address Ukraine’s defence needs and broader European security concerns. These talks take place against the backdrop of continued Russian aggression, with at least three civilians killed in Ukraine on Sunday.
While European nations strategise in Paris, diplomatic efforts are also unfolding elsewhere. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in Saudi Arabia for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, set to begin on Tuesday. However, Ukraine has reportedly not been invited to these discussions.
Despite this, US President Donald Trump has insisted that Ukraine “will be involved” in future negotiations aimed at ending the war.
Russia Engages in Diplomatic Talks
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and President Vladimir Putin’s aide, Yuriy Ushakov, are en route to Saudi Arabia for discussions with US officials. The meeting signals a possible shift in diplomatic efforts, with Washington and Moscow exploring potential steps towards a ceasefire.
Macron’s Role in European Diplomacy
President Macron, who convened Monday’s emergency talks, has played a key role in shaping Europe’s response to Russia’s invasion. Before the war began in 2022, he made a last-ditch attempt to prevent conflict by meeting Putin in Moscow. However, relations between France and Russia have since deteriorated, with France emerging as one of Ukraine’s strongest allies.
Now, Macron faces the challenge of ensuring that Europe remains a central player in negotiations for a possible ceasefire.
The Path Forward
As the war in Ukraine continues, Starmer’s commitment to deploying UK peacekeeping forces highlights Britain’s readiness to play a decisive role in ensuring long-term stability. With diplomatic talks gaining momentum, global leaders are under pressure to find a pathway towards peace.
