Starlink, Elon Musk’s Internet service company, has announced a 45% reduction in the price of its internet hardware.
Previously tagged at N800,000, the Starlink internet router now sells for N440,000, as per the latest update from the company.
While the monthly subscription fee remains steady at N38,000, the markdown in hardware costs comes amidst the recent surge of the Nigerian Naira against major foreign currencies.
Beyond Nigeria’s borders, Starlink has also adjusted its hardware prices in South Africa, despite lacking official licensing in the country. Despite this, South Africans have been tapping into Starlink’s services through global or regional roaming subscriptions, underscoring the widespread demand for dependable internet services.
The Nigerian Naira’s recent strengthening, hitting its highest point against the dollar since its devaluation in January 2024, has created favorable conditions for businesses like Starlink to revise their pricing strategies. This trend signals increased confidence in the Naira and presents an opportunity for companies to offer competitive pricing to consumers.
Since its introduction to the Nigerian market in January 2023, Starlink has captured the interest of consumers seeking reliable internet alternatives, particularly in areas with inadequate infrastructure.
According to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Starlink has emerged as a prominent ISP in Nigeria, boasting a customer base of 11,207 as of Q3 2023, surpassing many local competitors.
