Nigerian Referee Association Urged to Enhance Professional Standards.
In a recent meeting by the sports minister with the Nigerian Referees Association, significant discussions were held regarding the need to deepen and strengthen their professionalism to attract greater participation in FIFA and CAF-sanctioned competitions. The meeting underscored the pressing need for Nigerian referees to play more critical roles in these prestigious tournaments.
Expressing his concerns, the Sports Minister John Enoh stated, “I am not happy that Nigerian referees are not playing critical roles in both FIFA and CAF-sanctioned competitions due to our failure to meet the performance and professional thresholds set by these international bodies.”
In a bid to address this issue, he advised the referees to take the current 2024 FIFA Member Association Refereeing Development Course seriously. This course is designed to enhance the skills and professional standards of referees, ensuring they meet the rigorous demands of international football officiating.
The Nigerian Referees Association is committed to making substantial improvements in the training and development of its members, aiming to elevate their status and participation on the global stage. By focusing on professional development and adherence to international standards, Nigerian referees aspire to secure prominent roles in future FIFA and CAF competitions.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to achieving excellence and ensuring that Nigerian referees are well-represented in top-tier football tournaments, thereby enhancing the country’s reputation in the world of football officiating.
