Spain Secure Semi-Final Spot with Dramatic Win Over Hosts Germany.
Spain kept their hopes of winning a fourth European Championship alive as Mikel Merino’s 119th-minute goal secured a thrilling victory over hosts Germany, propelling them into the semi-finals of Euro 2024. The pulsating encounter at Stuttgart Arena lived up to its billing as the tournament’s most anticipated match.
The match, brimming with aggression, tension, and drama, was a spectacle from start to finish. Dani Olmo broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half, side-footing home a cross from 16-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal, who registered his third assist of the Euros. Olmo’s goal opened up the game, which had been cautiously contested until that point.
Germany responded with a spirited fightback, hitting the post through substitute Niclas Fullkrug. The home side equalised in the final minute of normal time when Florian Wirtz unleashed a thunderous strike that cannoned in off the post, sending the home fans into raptures.
Both sides had opportunities in extra time. Mikel Oyarzabal and Wirtz saw their efforts narrowly miss the target, while Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon made a superb save to deny Fullkrug’s header. Germany’s penalty appeals were dismissed after the ball struck Marc Cucurella’s hand in the box.
With the match heading towards penalties, Real Sociedad forward Merino, who had a stint at Newcastle United during the 2017-18 season, thumped home a header to seal Spain’s victory. The dramatic winner set up a semi-final clash with either France or Portugal.
Spain’s celebrations were slightly dampened by Dani Carvajal’s late dismissal for a second yellow card, but the joy and relief were evident among the Spanish fans and players as they greeted the final whistle.
Despite their elimination, Germany’s young talents, including Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, provided a glimpse of a promising future. However, the tournament marked the end of an era for the legendary Toni Kroos, who at 34, had announced this would be his final international tournament before retiring from football.
