Spain Battles Devastating Floods As Death Toll Rises

Spain Battles Devastating Floods As Death Toll Rises.

Spain is grappling with one of its deadliest flood disasters in recent history, as the death toll has reached 95, with dozens still missing following severe flash floods. Torrential rains swept across the eastern province of Valencia and beyond, destroying infrastructure and forcing desperate residents to seek refuge on rooftops and trees.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of national mourning to honour the victims as rescue operations continue under extreme conditions. “The whole of Spain weeps with you… we won’t abandon you,” Sánchez said in a national address, expressing solidarity with the affected communities and pledging a full recovery effort.

The flooding began on Tuesday, triggered by intense rainfall that caused rivers to burst their banks and transformed streets into raging torrents. Aemet, Spain’s national weather agency, reported that the town of Chiva, near Valencia, received an entire year’s worth of rainfall within just eight hours. Emergency services, including Spanish army units, have been deployed to conduct rescues, lifting people to safety from precarious positions on balconies and car rooftops.

Valencia recorded 92 fatalities, while additional deaths occurred in Castilla-La Mancha and Málaga. Among the victims was a 71-year-old British man who tragically passed away in hospital after being rescued from his home.

Eyewitnesses recounted the devastation, likening it to a “tsunami” that swept through communities with overwhelming force. Guillermo Serrano Pérez, a resident of Paiporta near Valencia, described how he and his parents were forced to abandon their vehicle and take refuge on a bridge as floodwaters rushed down the highway.

This disaster is Spain’s most lethal flood event since 1973, when over 150 people perished in the nation’s south-east. As the country mourns, scientists have raised concerns that climate change may have intensified the floods, urging a reassessment of preparedness measures. Meanwhile, discussions around the timing of flood alerts have ignited a debate among officials.

Rescue crews continue to search for survivors, yet the government warns that the death toll could climb further due to the high number of missing persons. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant as recovery operations proceed amid challenging weather conditions.
