On Tuesday, the governors of the South-East region announced their decision to engage with the federal government to seek the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
This resolution was part of a communiqué issued following a meeting of the South-East Governors’ Forum held in Enugu.
The meeting was attended by governors Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Dr. Alex Otti of Abia State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, and the host, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, along with other stakeholders.
In the communiqué, the Forum expressed condolences to the government and people of Abia, Ebonyi, and Imo states, the South-East region, and the family of Chief Ogbonnaya Onu on the passing of His Excellency, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
The Forum also welcomed a delegation led by former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, along with Chief Emeka Anyaoku, GCON, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, CFR, the Obi of Onitsha, who visited in solidarity.
Discussions at the meeting included a review of the South-East Security and Economic Summit report from September 28, 2023, in Owerri. The governors agreed to implement the report’s recommendations related to security and economic integration and emphasized the need for actionable plans on key issues.
The Forum resolved to meet with the President to address urgent matters affecting the South-East region. Additionally, they decided to engage with the federal government to secure the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.
The communiqué reads,
“The Forum commiserated with Government and people of Abia State, Ebonyi State, Imo State, South East, Nigeria and Chief Ogbonnaya Onu’s Family on the demise of His Excellency, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
“The Forum received the delegation of the Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, GCON, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, CFR, Obi of Onitsha who came on a solidarity visit to the Forum.
“The Forum deliberated on the reviewed report of the South East Security and economic Summit held in Owerri on the 28th September, 2023 and agreed to implement the aspects of the report pertaining to security and economic integration and affirmed its desire to put actionable plans on the key issues agreed.
“The Forum resolved to visit Mr. President to discuss pressing issues concerning the South East Region.
“The Forum also resolved to interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.”
