The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has warned organisations in the manufacturing sector against compromising the standard of products being churned out to Nigerians for consumption.
In a bid to rid the country of substandard products across all sectors, SON noted that the warning was inevitable, assuring that it would ensure mandatory compliance for the purpose of safeguarding the lives, and health of Nigerians.
Dr Ayuba Samuel, the head of Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP), gave the warning in Abuja while presenting the MANCAP certificates to NASENI Solar Energy Limited and 30 other companies in the country.
MANCAP, a regulation guided by Act No 14, 2015 of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, was established by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2006 to safeguard the lives of Nigerians and give value to Nigerian products as well as protect the environment and property.
Samuel explained: “Only organisations that get MANCAP certification can use the logo of SON on their products, it is one of the ways to boost consumers’ confidence about a particular product.”
He noted that every country in the world has a body that regulates standards and ensures that the products of that country are safeguarded, stressing that it’s the same with SON.
The Director-General of SON, Mallam Farouk Salim, had earlier called on federal government agencies to work with the organisation to boost the confidence of Nigerians using their products.
Represented by the Director, North Central Region, Sale Babaji, the DG said that SON has the power to prosecute anyone who uses its logo or mark without certification or approval.
