Gospel singer Sinach is facing a N5 billion lawsuit over alleged copyright infringement of her hit song “Way Maker”.
Music producer Michael Oluwole, also known as Maye, filed the lawsuit, claiming he is the co-owner of the song and demanding general damages of N5 billion for alleged cumulative infringements of his rights.
Maye alleges that he worked as a studio engineer on “Way Maker”, recording, mixing, and mastering the song, as well as creating instrumental accompaniments without a transfer of his performer’s rights. He claims Sinach released the song without his consent or compensation and has obtained licenses for the song without sharing the proceeds.
Sinach denies the allegations, claiming sole authorship of the song. She maintains that she composed, arranged, and performed the song with other artists before Maye’s involvement. Sinach argues that Maye’s role was limited to mixing the master recording, for which he was paid $300.
The trial, which began on November 27, 2024, has been adjourned until January 29 and 30, 2025, to allow the defense to present its case.
