Seun Kuti Criticizes Aisha Yesufu’s Advocacy For Women’s Liberation

Seun Kuti, Nigerian Afrobeat musician, has sparked controversy after criticizing Aisha Yesufu, convener of Bring Back Our Girls Movement, over her women’s liberation advocacy.

On TV, Kuti disagreed with Yesufu’s stance, condemning her hijab while advocating for women’s rights. He argued embracing Islamic/Christian practices erodes African identity.

Kuti posted: “Aisha Yesufu wants to liberate Nigerian women while wearing a hijab? Liberate yourself from your hijab first!”

Yesufu responded, “If Fela had discipline over his loin, Seun’s birth would’ve been avoided.” She accused Kuti of seeking attention, saying his “karaoke business” wasn’t successful.

Kuti’s comments ignited a heated social media debate, with some defending his views and others criticizing his approach.
