Serie A: Victor Osimhen’s Napoli Gets Lifeline To Secure European Football Ahead Of Next Season

Last Chance for Osimhen’s Napoli to Secure European Football

Napoli faces a critical match against Fiorentina on Friday, which could determine their chances of securing a place in European competition next season. The club’s defense of their Serie A title ended earlier in the season, and they now find themselves ninth in the standings, with only a Conference League spot as their remaining hope for continental football.

Last season, Napoli clinched the Scudetto with five games to spare and finished 16 points ahead of runners-up Lazio. However, this season has been a stark contrast, with Inter Milan wrapping up the league title with five games remaining. Napoli trails the leaders by 41 points.

Fiorentina, currently two points ahead of Napoli with a game in hand, won their previous encounter 3-1. This victory could be decisive if the teams end the season level on points, as the head-to-head record would come into play. Fiorentina has shown strong form recently, winning three of their last five league matches, while Napoli is without a win in their last five games.

Adding to Napoli’s challenges, top scorer Victor Osimhen is a serious doubt for the trip to Florence due to a muscular problem. In contrast, Fiorentina will be bolstered by the return of Andre Belotti, who missed their recent win over Monza.

Fiorentina, who have qualified for the Conference League final and remain unbeaten in Europe this season, aim to finish their league campaign on a high note and carry that momentum into their final against Olympiakos in Athens. Last year, they narrowly missed out on the title, losing to West Ham United in the final.

Elsewhere in Serie A, Atalanta will seek to bounce back from their Coppa Italia final loss to Juventus when they face Lecce away on Saturday. Atalanta is fifth, holding the last Champions League spot, three points ahead of AS Roma with a game in hand. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side also has the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen next week, where victory would ensure Champions League qualification.

Roma will look to capitalize on any slip-up by Atalanta when they host Genoa on Sunday. Lazio, one point behind Roma in seventh, will travel to face champions Inter Milan.

Bologna, who moved into third place ahead of Juventus on goal difference, will host Juventus on Monday. The hosts hope to take advantage of Juventus’s recent poor league form, having drawn their last five matches. AC Milan, having secured second place, will play Torino on Saturday.

The relegation battle also remains intense. Salernitana is the only club confirmed relegated and will host Hellas Verona on Monday. Verona is 14th, two points ahead of 17th-placed Empoli, who visit Udinese on Sunday. Sassuolo, sitting in 19th place, three points from safety, must defeat 16th-placed Cagliari on Sunday to keep their survival hopes alive.

With so much at stake, this weekend’s fixtures promise to be decisive for both the top and bottom of the Serie A table.
