Scott McTominay scored an incredible stoppage-time brace as Manchester United came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
A series of United errors had allowed Brentford to take a first-half lead as first Casemiro gave the ball away, Victor Lindelof failed to clear after Yoane Wissa drove into the box and Andre Onana should have saved Mathias Jensen’s shot – but didn’t, letting the ball squirm under his body.
Brentford were good value for their lead and came agonisingly close to a first win at Old Trafford since 1937, but substitute McTominay had other ideas and levelled in the 93rd minute after reacting first to a rebound, controlling well and drilling home.
Then in the seventh minute of additional time, Harry Maguire flicked on a free-kick to McTominay, who planted a header beyond the goalkeeper and sent Old Trafford wild.
Thomas Strakosha in the Brentford goal was making his Premier League debut and was barely tested until the final 10 minutes, which made United’s stirring comeback all the more remarkable as they created few chances of note before having a goal correctly disallowed for offside in the 89th minte.
The win ends a run of back-to-back United defeats at home and lifts them to ninth in the table on 12 points. Brentford stay on seven points and are 14th.
