Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the long-abandoned 70 million-gallon-per-day Adiyan Water Project.
He made this pledge at the fifth Lagos International Water Conference, emphasising the project’s completion within the next year.
The conference, themed ‘Financing Water and Sanitation for a Greater Lagos,’ saw Governor Sanwo-Olu stressing the crucial role of financial resources in achieving water security, accessibility, and sustainability.
He stated, “For us, it is not just about lip service. We want to move away from rhetoric and take action. Let this not be just a talk shop where we exchange ideas and nothing happens in the next year.”
He acknowledged the limitations of training alone, urging the formation of actionable partnerships. “We need to identify what needs to be done and build partnerships.
The Adiyan water treatment plant must be completed, no matter the cost. I am looking for committed partners, not just proposals. Water has no enemies, but we have become its enemies.
I hope the conversations we are having today and tomorrow will lead to practical solutions. In the next 12 to 18 months, we aim to change the narrative,” he concluded.
