Rotimi Amaechi Vows To Contest 2027 ADC Presidential Primary

Rotimi Amaechi Vows To Contest 2027 ADC Presidential Primary.

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has declared his unwavering commitment to contest the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections. Speaking to journalists in Kano on Wednesday, the ex-Minister of Transportation asserted that he has no intention of stepping down for any other aspirant, emphasising the need for a transparent and open contest to strengthen the party’s democratic process.

Amaechi, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) after expressing disillusionment with President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, aims to secure the ADC ticket to challenge Tinubu in 2027. “I will contest the ADC presidential primary, and by God’s grace, I hope to win so that I can face Tinubu in 2027. I am not stepping down for anyone. Let the people decide who they want to lead,” he stated, underscoring his belief in internal democracy within the ADC.

The former governor highlighted his qualifications, describing himself as one of the most prepared candidates for Nigeria’s top job. “If you look at all those aspiring, including Tinubu, who is better prepared than I am? My candidacy offers unity because I come from the South, and we are not in conflict with any region,” Amaechi said. He dismissed suggestions that his political influence in Rivers State has waned due to the dominance of his rival, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Citing a recent ADC inauguration in Rivers, Amaechi noted, “The turnout was massive from the airport to the venue, and nobody paid for that mobilisation. That should tell you where the people stand.”

Amaechi’s announcement follows his resignation from the APC last month, where he had previously contested the 2022 presidential primary, finishing second to Tinubu. His move to the ADC aligns with a broader coalition of opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, who have also expressed interest in the ADC’s 2027 ticket. Amaechi, however, remained firm on his participation, stating that while he respects the party’s decisions on zoning, he will not withdraw from the race.

Criticising the Tinubu administration, Amaechi argued that Nigerians are increasingly dissatisfied with its policies, pointing to widespread economic hardship and exclusionary governance. “Whether the government wants to conduct credible elections or not, time is up. Nigerians are tired because no one is happy under Tinubu, not even in Rivers or across the South. People are suffering everywhere,” he said, accusing the president of favouring a select few in his appointments.

As the ADC prepares for its primaries, Amaechi’s bold declaration sets the stage for a competitive race within the opposition coalition. His insistence on transparency and his confidence in grassroots support signal a determined campaign to offer Nigerians a credible alternative in 2027.
