Rivers United Stun Remo Stars As Enyimba Triumph In Thrilling NPFL Weekend.

The Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) delivered an exhilarating weekend of football action, with Matchweek 32 showcasing standout performances, dramatic finishes, and unexpected results. Fans across the country were treated to a spectacle of skill and determination as Rivers United and Enyimba emerged as the headline acts in a series of gripping encounters over the weekend of April 5-6, 2025.

Rivers United Halt Remo Stars’ Charge

In one of the most anticipated fixtures of the weekend, Rivers United secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over title contenders Remo Stars at home in Port Harcourt on Sunday, April 6. The match, which pitted two of the league’s heavyweights against each other, lived up to its billing as a tense, tactical battle. Rivers United’s disciplined defense and clinical finishing proved decisive, with Sholumade scoring the only goal of the game in the 84th minute.

The win marked Rivers United’s fifth victory in their last seven matches, reinforcing their credentials as serious contenders for the NPFL title this season. Coach Finidi George praised his team’s resilience. “Remo Stars are a tough side, but my boys showed character today. This is a big step for us,” George said post-match. The result leaves Rivers United 5 points behind but remains firmly in the hunt at the top of the table, while Remo Stars will look to bounce back quickly from this rare setback.

Enyimba Edge Abia Warriors in Thrilling Derby

Elsewhere, the Oriental Derby between Enyimba and Abia Warriors provided a feast of entertainment at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba. The two-time CAF Champions League winners, Enyimba, emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over their fierce rivals on Sunday. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, the victory sparked wild celebrations among the home fans, who chanted “The People’s Elephant” long after the final whistle.

Other Notable Results

The weekend’s action kicked off with Nasarawa United delivering a commanding 2-0 performance against Akwa United in Lafia, boosting Nasarawa’s hopes of climbing out of the mid-table mire. Similarly, Niger Tornadoes impressed with a 2-0 triumph over El-Kanemi Warriors in Minna.

Plateau United and Kwara United played out a tense 0-0 draw in Jos, a result that frustrated both sets of fans but highlighted the defensive solidity of the two sides. In Makurdi, Lobi Stars and Sunshine Stars shared the spoils in a 1-1 stalemate. Meanwhile, Katsina United and Bayelsa United also finished 1-1, with both teams exchanging goals in an evenly contested affair. Shooting Stars and Ikorodu City rounded off the weekend with a goalless draw in Ibadan, a result that left both sides ruing missed opportunities.

What It Means for the NPFL

As the 2024/2025 NPFL season progresses, this weekend’s results have added fresh intrigue to the title race and the battle for continental spots. Rivers United’s victory over Remo Stars sends a strong message to their rivals, while Enyimba’s derby win keeps them in contention among the league’s elite. With teams showing several fixtures still to play, the NPFL promises more twists and turns as the season draws to conclusion.

Football fans across Nigeria are already counting down to next weekend’s fixtures, eager for more of the drama and excitement that make the NPFL one of Africa’s most captivating leagues. For now, Rivers United and Enyimba bask in the glory of a weekend well won, setting the stage for an unforgettable season finale.
