Rafael Nadal to Skip Wimbledon to Focus on Paris Olympics.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal has announced that he will not participate in this year’s tournament, choosing instead to focus on the upcoming Olympics in Paris. The 38-year-old Spaniard, who claimed Wimbledon titles in 2008 and 2010, will be competing in a clay-court event in Bastad, Sweden, as preparation for the Olympic tennis tournament starting on 27 July.
Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, expressed his sadness at missing Wimbledon, stating that the tournament’s “great atmosphere” will always hold a special place in his heart. “I am saddened to be missing Wimbledon, which will always be in my heart,” Nadal said.
Following his first-round exit at the French Open last month, Nadal has set his sights on returning to the clay courts of Roland Garros for the Olympics. “With this goal, we believe that the best for my body is not to change surface and keep playing on clay until then,” he explained.
Currently ranked 264th in the world, Nadal will also compete in doubles at the Olympics alongside fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. Despite previous statements suggesting he might retire later this year, Nadal mentioned before the French Open that he could not confirm “100%” if it would be his final appearance at the tournament.
Wimbledon, which starts on 1 July, will undoubtedly miss Nadal’s presence, but fans will be eagerly anticipating his return to the clay courts as he aims for Olympic glory in Paris.
