In a high-profile meeting with governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Friday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu outlined his strategic vision for a comprehensive revamp of Nigeria’s security architecture. Among the key proposals are the establishment of three new police formations to complement the existing force.
President Tinubu specifically highlighted the need for better-trained forest guards, equipped with modern technological gadgets and advanced weapons to fortify national security in forested areas. The aim is to enhance the effectiveness of these guards in addressing security challenges.
In a move to safeguard critical economic sectors, President Tinubu proposed the creation of specialized police units for the solid mineral and marine industries. Recognizing the importance of Nigeria’s marine economy, he emphasized the establishment of a dedicated marine police force. Additionally, special police units would be deployed to secure the solid mineral sector, preventing illegal activities and safeguarding valuable resources.
President Tinubu expressed his commitment to investing in security, underlining the significance of securing the nation’s marine and solid mineral resources. He specifically mentioned the formation of a marine police force to protect the expansive marine economy and prevent illicit activities.
Furthermore, President Tinubu revealed plans to establish reserves for the nation’s mineral resources. He emphasized the strategic importance of purchasing and storing minerals, especially gold, to bolster the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
“We have a big marine economy, and I do not see why we should not have the marine police. “We will have the same in solid minerals to keep the scavengers away. I am ready to invest in security”. President Tinubu also revealed his plans to stock the nation’s mineral resources, in reserve. “We will buy our own minerals and keep them in reserves, especially gold, which will be effective in our foreign exchange reserve,’’ the President told the governors.
The proposed overhaul signals a proactive approach to addressing security concerns and fortifying key economic sectors, reflecting President Tinubu’s dedication to ensuring a secure and prosperous future for Nigeria.
