President Tinubu Extends Tenure Of Customs Chief Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension to the tenure of Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), as announced by the Presidency on 31 July 2025. Originally set to conclude on 31 August 2025, Adeniyi’s term will now continue until August 2026, allowing him to further advance critical reforms within the agency.
The extension, authorised by the President, aims to support Adeniyi in consolidating ongoing initiatives and completing key projects under the current administration. These include the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and fulfilling Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol. These efforts are central to enhancing trade facilitation, boosting revenue generation, and strengthening border security.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated that President Tinubu acknowledges Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and dedication to service. The President expressed confidence that the extension will enable the NCS to further its strategic objectives, ensuring a more efficient and secure customs framework for Nigeria.
Adeniyi, who was appointed Acting Comptroller-General in June 2023 and confirmed in October 2023, has been instrumental in driving reforms to streamline operations and enhance Nigeria’s economic landscape. This decision underscores the administration’s commitment to continuity and progress in one of the nation’s critical agencies.
