President Bola Tinubu expressed gratitude to Mr. Jim Obazee, the Central Bank Investigator, for his service, marking the formal conclusion of the months-long investigation.
In an official statement released on Friday by Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Tinubu acknowledged the closure of the investigation following the submission of a final comprehensive report and the dismantling of all operational structures involved. The investigation concluded on March 31, 2024.
Tinubu emphasised that, with the conclusion of the investigation, relevant law enforcement and regulatory agencies have commenced follow-up actions. He commended Obazee for his dedication and professionalism throughout the critical national assignment, extending his best wishes for his future endeavours.
The appointment of Obazee as a special investigator to probe the apex bank and related entities was made by the President on July 30, 2023, in line with the anti-corruption agenda outlined in Section 15(5) of the Nigerian Constitution. The investigation commenced immediately upon appointment.
Over the course of eight months, Obazee was tasked with strengthening transparency and integrity within key government business entities and stemming leakages within the CBN and related entities. He was also directed to compile a comprehensive report on public wealth held by corrupt individuals and entities, both public and private.
Working alongside a proficient team and collaborating with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies, Obazee provided regular briefings to the President on the progress of the investigation.
Tinubu reminded Obazee of his directive to suspend CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, on June 9, 2023. Emefiele was subsequently apprehended at his Lagos residence by operatives of the Department of State Services and transported to Abuja for further proceedings.
