President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of new members to the governing councils of three prominent Nigerian universities: the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NAU). The appointments, announced on Tuesday, reflect a diverse selection of academics and professionals from across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, aimed at strengthening the leadership and development of these institutions.

For the University of Abuja, the newly appointed council members include:

Prof. Rosemary Iriowen Egonmwan (South-South)

Dr. Adedeji Adefuye (South-West)

Prof. Sarki Abba Abdulkadir (North-West)

Prof. Aminu Mohammed Dukku (North-East)

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, welcomes two new council members:

Rt. Hon. Barr. Ogbonna Eugene Odo (South-East)

Muhammad Inuwa Tahir, MNI (North-West)

For Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, the appointed members are:

Dr. Nkem Okeke (South-East)

Ofoke Chukwuma Charles Ugbala (South-East)

Dame Amina Patrick Yakowa (North-West)

Nojeeb Oriola Agunbiade (South-West)

The appointments have been hailed as a strategic move to enhance the governance and academic excellence of these universities, which are among Nigeria’s leading higher education institutions. The diverse representation ensures a broad range of perspectives, fostering inclusivity and regional balance in decision-making.

A statement from the Presidency noted that the new council members are expected to bring their wealth of experience to bear in advancing the universities’ missions of research, innovation, and community development. The appointments take effect immediately, with the new members set to work alongside existing council leadership to drive progress.

Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism that the new appointees will contribute to addressing challenges such as funding, infrastructure, and academic quality. The University of Abuja, UNN, and NAU remain pivotal in shaping Nigeria’s future through education, and these appointments signal a commitment to their continued growth.

The Presidency urged the new council members to uphold integrity, transparency, and dedication in their roles, as they work to elevate the standards of these esteemed institutions.
