Premier League’s First Black Referee Uriah Rennie Dies At 65.
The football community is in mourning following the passing of Uriah Rennie, the Premier League’s first Black referee, at the age of 65. The Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association announced the sad news on Sunday, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the sport.
Born in Jamaica, Rennie moved to Sheffield as a child and went on to make history in 1997 when he took charge of a Premier League match between Derby County and Wimbledon. Over the course of his illustrious career, he officiated more than 300 matches, including 175 in England’s top flight, earning widespread respect for his professionalism and dedication.
The Premier League paid tribute to Rennie’s groundbreaking legacy, stating on Monday: “As the first Black referee in the Premier League, Uriah was a pioneering trailblazer whose legacy will live on, continuing to inspire future generations.” His pioneering role paved the way for others, though it was not until 2023 that another Black referee, Sam Allison, officiated a Premier League game, overseeing Sheffield United’s clash with Luton Town.
Rennie retired from refereeing in 2008, leaving behind a legacy that extended beyond the pitch. A respected figure in his adopted hometown of Sheffield, he was known for his commitment to the community and his passion for the game. In April, Rennie shared a deeply personal update with the BBC, revealing he was learning to walk again after a rare condition left him paralysed from the waist down. His resilience and determination in the face of such adversity inspired many.
Tributes have flooded in from across the footballing world, with former England and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore leading the praise. “Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of referee Uriah Rennie. A pioneer, trailblazer and a bloody good ref,” Collymore wrote on social media.
The Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association expressed their grief, stating: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former chair and trailblazing referee, Uriah Rennie.” Both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday also shared heartfelt messages, with the Blades noting they were “saddened to learn of the passing of popular and trailblazing referee Uriah Rennie,” while Wednesday described him as a “pioneering” figure.
Rennie’s impact on football and his community will not be forgotten. His trailblazing journey broke barriers and inspired countless individuals, ensuring his legacy endures for generations to come. Thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
