Porto And Roma Play Out Draw In Europa League Knockout Play-Off First Leg.
Porto and Roma, two of the pre-season favourites to lift the Europa League trophy, played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their knockout-phase play-off.
Roma took the lead just before half-time when Zeki Celik reacted swiftly to Artem Dovbyk’s knock-on, hooking the ball into the net from close range. However, Porto responded in the second half, capitalising on a defensive lapse. Diogo Costa’s long ball downfield caught Roma off guard, allowing Francisco Moura to strike from the edge of the box. His effort took a deflection off Celik before finding the back of the net—marking his first goal for the Portuguese side.
Roma’s task was made more difficult when midfielder Bryan Cristante received a second booking, resulting in a red card that rules him out of the second leg next Thursday.
Pre-season predictions by Opta had tipped Porto as the favourites to win the Europa League with a 17.8% chance, while Roma were ranked fifth at 8.2%. However, both teams failed to finish in the top eight during the group stage, forcing them into this play-off round rather than securing direct qualification for the last 16.
With everything still to play for, the return leg in Rome promises to be a decisive encounter in their quest for European glory.
