Peter Obi Defends Clean Political Record, Reaffirms One-Term Pledge
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has publicly challenged critics to investigate his political career, asserting that he has never been involved in election rigging, thuggery, or any form of electoral malpractice. In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, Obi emphasised his commitment to fair competition and principled leadership, distancing himself from the violence and manipulation that have often plagued Nigeria’s electoral process.
“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice,” Obi declared. “I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name.” He further noted that his political opponents have never faced unfair treatment, false accusations, or undue financial burdens during campaigns against him, underscoring his belief in “fair competition, not manufactured victories.”
Obi’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about his pledge to serve a single four-year term if elected president in 2027, a promise that has sparked both support and scepticism. Critics, including human rights lawyer Femi Falana, have questioned the substance of the pledge, arguing that a limited tenure alone does not guarantee national transformation. In response, Obi expressed bafflement at the controversy, insisting that a sincere leader could achieve significant reforms within 48 months. “I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power,” he said, highlighting his focus on service over personal ambition.
The former governor outlined a vision for a four-year presidency that would prioritise confronting corruption, redirecting resources to critical sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure, and strengthening the rule of law. He criticised extravagant government spending, such as the recent purchase of presidential jets, suggesting that such funds could be better allocated to address Nigeria’s pressing needs. “Leadership is not about entitlement; it is about delivering meaningful impact,” Obi stated.
Obi’s supporters have rallied behind his message, with many on X praising his clean record and commitment to ethical governance. Posts on the platform echoed his challenge to investigate his past, with users describing him as a leader untainted by the corruption and violence often associated with Nigerian politics. His one-term proposal continues to fuel discussions as the 2027 elections approach, with Obi positioning himself as a candidate dedicated to transforming Nigeria through integrity and focused leadership.
