Peter Obi Condemns Killing Of 16 Youths In Anambra.

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep outrage over the killing of 16 young men in Nibo, Anambra State. In a post on social media platform X, Obi strongly condemned the tragic incident, describing it as senseless and unacceptable.

“I am deeply saddened and outraged by the unending killing and death in our society. The senseless killing of 16 young men in Nibo, Anambra State remains condemnable,” Obi wrote.

The violent attack occurred during the annual New Yam festival in the Nibo community, located in Awka South Local Government Area. Suspected members of cult groups reportedly launched an assault, turning the festival into a scene of bloodshed.

According to reports, the attackers first stormed a bar near Oye Nwochichi Market, close to the festival grounds by Nibo Old Maternity, where they opened fire on the crowd, killing eight people on the spot. The perpetrators then moved to another area near Eke Nibo Market, where more lives were lost.

In his statement, Obi highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that this heinous act represents a tragic loss not only for the victims’ families but also for the community as a whole. He emphasised the sanctity of life, urging the authorities to take decisive action.

“This despicable act is not only a profound loss to their families but also a stark reminder of the escalating violence that continues to plague our communities. Life is sacred, and no one has the right to take it. Such heinous actions reveal a disturbing disregard for human dignity and the rule of law,” Obi wrote.

He further expressed concern that the attack took place near the Governor’s Lodge and the Anambra State Police Command headquarters, raising questions about the effectiveness of security in the region.

“Our nation cannot progress if we allow violence to become the norm, and we must work collectively to address the underlying causes of this growing menace,” he added.

In closing, Obi called on security agencies to act swiftly in bringing the perpetrators to justice, urging that measures be put in place to prevent such incidents from recurring.

“I call on the authorities to act swiftly in bringing the perpetrators of this horrific crime to justice and ensuring that such incidents are never repeated. Nigeria must become a nation where safety and justice prevail over violence and lawlessness. May God grant the departed eternal rest and give their families, along with the Government of Anambra, the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss,” he concluded.

The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community, with many calling for enhanced security measures to prevent further bloodshed. The authorities are yet to confirm any arrests related to the incident, as investigations continue.
