Passengers Escape Unharmed As Red Bus Catches Fire In Lagos.
A major tragedy was averted on Saturday morning after passengers narrowly escaped death when a public transit Bus caught fire in the Maryland area of Lagos State.
The bus, which was en route from Ikorodu to CMS, began emitting smoke near the driver’s section before bursting into flames. The incident sparked panic among commuters, but thanks to swift reactions, all passengers were able to disembark before the fire spread.
An eyewitness and passenger aboard the vehicle recounted the moment the fire began: “At first, we thought the smoke was coming from another car nearby, but as it got thicker, we realised it was our bus. We rushed off immediately, just in time before the flames took over.”
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the experience left many shaken. The passenger also alleged that both the driver and conductor abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene as the fire started.
“The driver and conductor ran off. They didn’t even wait to help or check on us. It’s like they already knew the bus was faulty but still took it out on the road, risking our lives,” the passenger said.
Emergency responders, including officers from the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, promptly arrived at the scene. Their quick intervention helped bring the fire under control and ease the ensuing traffic congestion.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the fire or confirm whether the bus had been reported as faulty prior to the incident.
The safety of public transportation remains a growing concern in Lagos, and this incident has once again highlighted the need for regular vehicle inspections and stricter safety measures to protect commuters.
