Paris Olympics 2024: A Historic Return with “Games Wide Open” Motto.
The Paris Olympics 2024, officially commencing with the opening ceremony on Friday, marks the first time in 100 years that the French capital has hosted the summer Games. This year’s motto, “Games Wide Open,” reflects the spirit of inclusivity and excitement that the city aims to bring to this historic event.
The majority of the events will take place in or around Paris’s most iconic locations, adding a unique charm to the Games. The opening ceremony promises to be a spectacular affair, with athletes and dignitaries being transported down six kilometres of the River Seine in boats, providing room for 300,000 spectators to witness the grandeur.
While few details have been disclosed about the ceremony, speculation is rife about performances by Celine Dion and Lady Gaga. The artistic director, Thomas Jolly, has expressed his desire to “show France in all its diversity,” hinting at a vibrant and inclusive celebration.
This edition of the Olympics is particularly notable for achieving gender parity among athletes, with 5,250 male and 5,250 female competitors. As millions are expected to attend, Paris is putting the final touches on preparations, ensuring a memorable experience for all.
French President Emmanuel Macron has assured that the country is “ready and we will be ready throughout the Games.” However, some Parisians have expressed concerns on social media about overcrowding, price inflation, and transportation challenges.
On the day of the opening ceremony, a series of fires disrupted the French rail network, including the Eurostar, underscoring the extensive security measures in place. Up to 5,000 police, soldiers, and hired guards will be on patrol at any given time. The River Seine, a focal point for the ceremony, has been fenced off, requiring residents to use QR codes for access, a measure that has drawn some criticism from local businesses.
Despite these challenges, French authorities have promised to remove the barricades after the event. The cost of hosting the Games is estimated to be about €9 billion (£7.6 billion), with the organising committee committed to making it the greenest Olympics in history.
As the world turns its eyes to Paris, the city is set to deliver an Olympic Games like no other, celebrating diversity, sustainability, and the indomitable spirit of sport.
