Super Falcons Suffer Another Defeat in Group Game Against Spain.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons faced another setback in their second group match at the Paris 2024 Olympics, losing 1-0 to reigning world champions Spain on Sunday.
After their initial defeat to Brazil, the Falcons were hopeful of a comeback. The match, held in Nantes, was a fiercely contested encounter with Asisat Oshoala leading the Nigerian attack.
In the first half, both teams were evenly matched, although Spain dominated possession. Spain thought they had broken the deadlock in the 37th minute, but VAR intervention disallowed the goal, providing a reprieve for Nigeria.
The second half saw Spain intensify their efforts, pushing the Super Falcons back into their half. Despite a valiant defensive effort, Nigeria conceded the decisive goal in the 85th minute, sealing a 1-0 victory for Spain and ensuring they took all three points.
This loss places additional pressure on the Super Falcons as they look to advance from their group in the upcoming match against Japan, and anything short of victory means hope of qualifications is thwarted.
