Paris 2024 Olympics: Ajayi and Ashe Advance to Men’s 100m Semi-Finals.
Nigerian sprinters Kanyinsola Ajayi and Favour Ashe have secured their places in the men’s 100m semi-finals at the ongoing 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Ajayi, making his Olympic debut, impressively won Heat 5 with a time of 10.02 seconds, finishing ahead of reigning Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs, who clocked in at 10.05 seconds. Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu secured third place with a time of 10.06 seconds.
Fellow debutant Ashe finished fourth in Heat 4, trailing Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, Japan’s Abdul Hakim Sani Brown, and Thailand’s Thurpool Bonboon. Despite not finishing in the top three, Ashe advanced to the semi-finals by securing the last non-automatic qualification spot.
In other Olympic news, Nigerian swimmer Adaku Nwandu finished second in Heat 6 of the women’s 50m freestyle, clocking in behind Elizaveta Pecherskikh. Despite her strong performance, the 16-year-old did not advance to the final.
As the Olympics continue, both Ajayi and Ashe will aim to further their achievements in the 100m semi-finals, while Nigeria looks to enhance its presence on the global stage across various sports.
