Opposition Criticises Ondo Governor Over Deputy’s Seven-Month Sick Leave.
The opposition in Ondo State has sharply criticised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa over the prolonged absence of his deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami, who has been on sick leave for seven months. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition groups have accused the governor of failing to provide transparent updates on Adelami’s health, raising concerns about governance and accountability in the state.
According to PDP state chairman, Tola Alabere, the extended absence of the deputy governor has left a leadership vacuum, with no clear communication from the governor’s office. The opposition argues that Adelami’s prolonged medical leave, reportedly due to an undisclosed illness, has hindered effective governance, particularly as the state prepares for upcoming elections. They have called for the governor to either confirm Adelami’s capacity to resume duties or appoint an acting deputy to ensure continuity.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration has defended its handling of the situation, stating that the deputy governor is receiving medical treatment abroad and is expected to return soon. A statement from the governor’s office highlighted Adelami’s contributions to the state prior to his illness and urged residents to remain patient, assuring them that governance remains unaffected. However, the lack of a specific timeline for Adelami’s return has fuelled public speculation and unrest.
The controversy has sparked broader discussions about transparency in leadership, with civil society groups urging the state government to prioritise clear communication. As Ondo State navigates this political storm, the opposition has vowed to keep pressing for accountability, while residents await further developments regarding the deputy governor’s health and the administration’s next steps.
