The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, formally announced his bid for re-election on Tuesday, setting the stage for a competitive gubernatorial race slated for November 16.
The declaration ceremony, held at the Gani Fawehinmi Arcade in Akure, was marked by a jubilant atmosphere as Aiyedatiwa, flanked by his loyalists and supporters, articulated his vision for the state’s future.
Assuring continuity from his late predecessor, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, whose untimely passing elevated Aiyedatiwa to the governorship on December 27, 2023, the incumbent leader pledged to build upon Akeredolu’s legacy of progress.
Emphasising key pillars of governance such as welfare enhancement, infrastructural development, and bolstered security measures, Aiyedatiwa conveyed his commitment to steering the state towards greater prosperity.
The event saw the presence of notable figures within the Ondo State APC, including former senator Ajayi Boroffice, House of Representatives member Abiola Makinde, as well as representatives from the state House of Assembly and the party’s State Working Committee.
In his address, Aiyedatiwa urged voters to eschew electoral malpractice, emphasising the importance of upholding the integrity of the democratic process.
Echoing resounding support, Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, declared solidarity from the majority of assembly members, highlighting their unwavering backing for Aiyedatiwa’s candidature. Similarly, House of Representatives member Abiola Makinde affirmed unanimous endorsement from the state’s congressional delegation, underscoring Aiyedatiwa’s suitability for another term based on his performance thus far.
As the gubernatorial primary approaches on April 24, Aiyedatiwa braces for a competitive showdown against a field of formidable contenders. Among them are former Commissioner for Finance Wale Akinterinwa, ex-House of Representatives member Mayowa Akinfolarin, former Secretary to the State Government Oladunni Odu, and former Special Adviser on Health Prof Francis Faduyile.
Additionally, prominent figures such as former governorship aspirant Chief Olusola Oke, former chairman of the Ondo State Oil-producing Areas Development Commission Gbenga Edema, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Dr. Paul Akintelure, and Brig. Gen. Olamide Ohunyeye (retd.) are poised to vie for the APC ticket, promising an electrifying contest in the months ahead.
