Obasanjo Urges Increased Christian Participation In Politics For Ethical Transformation

He urged churches to demand for justice, fairness and equity in the social, political and economic life of the nation.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advocated for greater Christian involvement in politics to infuse integrity and ethical values into the realm, shifting the paradigm from its current perceived state of “dirty” to one of principled engagement.

Obasanjo highlighted that while politics inherently should not be tarnished, it often succumbs to unsavoury practices due to the conduct of its participants.

Addressing the audience at the 57th annual convention and 67th anniversary of The Gospel Faith Mission International (GOFAMINT), in Gospel City, Ogunmakin, Ogun State, Obasanjo emphasised the imperative for Christians to set themselves apart from corrupt individuals and negative influences within the political arena.

He urged them to be exemplars of righteousness while actively participating in the political sphere.

During his speech, centred on the theme “The Roles of the Church in Nation Building at a Time Like This,” the former President stressed that adherents must adhere to the teachings of Christ and continuously evaluate their actions by contemplating what Christ would do in similar circumstances.

He underscored the significance of the church stepping up as a moral force, particularly during times when the nation faces multifaceted challenges.

Obasanjo’s remarks underscore the urgent need for Christians to take up a prominent and ethical role within the political landscape, contributing to its transformation and influencing the national discourse with values that align with their faith.

According to him: “We are in the world, yet we are not of the world. The influence of corrupting corruption is enormous. We are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. We are to be like Jesus who, when He was in the world, did not belong to the world.”

He urged churches to demand for justice, fairness and equity in the social, political and economic life of the nation.

“Food without salt is stale. The church is meant to flavour it’s environment. A church that cannot play its role has lost its saltiness. Christ has chosen us to bring forth fruits and that our fruits should abide,” he said.

General-Overseer of GOFAMINT, Pastor (Dr) Elijav O. Abina recalled his visit to Aso Rock Chapel when Obasanjo he was President.

He said he met Obasanjo teaching Sunday School, saying when they spoke on his arrival at the convention ground, the former President told him to his astonishment that he is still teaching Sunday School classes.
