The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an inquiry into a tragic boat accident that claimed lives, including those of notable Nollywood actors and crew members, on the Anam River in Anambra State.
The incident occurred five days ago when a speedboat, carrying 12 film personnel and a boat operator, collided with a fishing canoe, resulting in five fatalities. Among the deceased were renowned actors Paul Odonwodo (Junior Pope), Abigail Frederick, Precious Oforum, and Joseph Anointing.
The NSIB, tasked with investigating transportation accidents, has dispatched its investigators to the scene to determine the cause of the disaster. Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, stated that the bureau would collaborate with the Marine Police Section of the Anambra Police Command, maritime authorities, and industry experts.
The investigation’s scope includes examining the wreckage from both vessels, conducting interviews with surviving crew members and eyewitnesses, reviewing operational procedures for the commercial speedboat, analysing weather and environmental conditions, and assessing compliance with safety standards and regulations.
Expressing condolences, Oladeji conveyed NSIB’s solidarity with the families and loved ones of the deceased, pledging a comprehensive investigation to prevent future tragedies.
The bureau intends to release both a preliminary and a final report, which will offer recommendations to enhance safety and avert similar accidents.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones,” Oladeji concluded.
