NSCDC Thwarts Major Railway Vandalism In Bauchi, Seizes Stolen Sleepers.

In a significant victory against infrastructure vandalism, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intercepted a trailer loaded with stolen railway sleepers in Bauchi State, dealing a blow to criminal activities targeting Nigeria’s rail network. The operation, conducted by the NSCDC’s Mining Team, took place on 20 June 2025 along the Missu axis, highlighting the agency’s commitment to safeguarding critical national assets.

The trailer, which was transporting the stolen railway sleepers, had concealed the materials beneath sacks of sawdust, raising suspicions of deliberate intent to vandalise public infrastructure. Dr Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), confirmed the interception in a statement issued on Tuesday by Mr Yakub Mahmood, Deputy Director of Public Relations at the NRC. Three suspects were apprehended during the operation, and both the vehicle and the stolen sleepers are now in NSCDC custody for further investigation.

“This arrest underscores our zero-tolerance policy toward railway vandalism. We will not relent in pursuing individuals or criminal networks that threaten the safety and sustainability of Nigeria’s rail system,” Dr Opeifa declared, as reported by TheStar. He further called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around railway infrastructure to aid in curbing such crimes.

The NSCDC’s swift action has been hailed as a critical step in protecting Nigeria’s railway network, which has faced repeated attacks by vandals in recent years. According to TheNewsGuru, the NSCDC and the Nigerian Railway Police have made several arrests and recovered stolen materials across Bauchi, Kano, Kwara, and Gombe states, demonstrating a robust crackdown on vandalism.

In a statement shared on X, the NRC reiterated its resolve to pursue every culprit threatening the future of rail transport in Nigeria, describing the incident as one of the “biggest heists in recent times.” The recovered sleepers, essential components of railway tracks, are vital to maintaining the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s rail services.

The NSCDC’s efforts have been lauded by local authorities and residents, who see the operation as a testament to the agency’s dedication to protecting public infrastructure. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the vandalism network and ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law.

As Nigeria continues to invest in its railway system to boost economic growth and connectivity, such interventions by the NSCDC are crucial in safeguarding these developments. The public is urged to support security agencies by providing timely information to prevent further damage to critical infrastructure.

This successful operation marks a significant step forward in the fight against vandalism, sending a clear message that Nigeria’s rail assets are not fair game for criminals. With continued vigilance and collaboration between the NRC, NSCDC, and the public, Nigeria’s railway network can remain a cornerstone of the nation’s progress.
