Elegbeleye Dismisses Speculations of Interest in NFF General Secretary Position
Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has refuted media speculations suggesting that he is vying for the post of General Secretary at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The Second Vice President of the nation’s Football Governing Body dismissed these claims, labeling them as purely fictional.
Addressing the rumors in response to widespread discussions on the matter, particularly in prominent Nigerian WhatsApp groups like “Sports World Platform”, through a communique made available by Sunday Agunbiade (Mr VAR).
Elegbeleye, a former Director General of the National Sports Commission, clarified that he has never pursued such a role. He challenged those spreading the baseless story to provide concrete evidence or focus on more substantial endeavors.
Elegbeleye, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, emphasized his dedication to elevating the NPFL to new heights through his expertise. In a phone call, he reiterated, “I have never expressed any interest in becoming the General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation. The individuals behind these allegations may have fabricated them without any factual basis. Lesser beings are often intimidated, as the saying goes.”
He further remarked on the sudden attention he has received due to these unfounded claims, stating, “Some individuals seem to have chosen me as their newsworthy topic. However, I want to make it clear that I am not interested in the NFF General Secretary position, nor will I ever be.
“My focus remains on enhancing the apex League and ensuring its progression. Let them enjoy their narrative while I continue working towards our league’s success.” He concluded.
