Govima Sports Report on the concluded NPFL 2023/2024 Football Season.

The 2023/2024 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) season concluded with Rangers International FC emerging as the champions. The trophy presentation took place at the new Jos Stadium, marking a historic moment for the Enugu-based club. The season finale encapsulated the excitement and unpredictability that characterise Nigerian football, with both triumph and heartbreak experienced across the league.

CHAMPIONS: RANGERS INTERNATIONAL FC

Rangers International FC clinched the NPFL title with a dominant performance throughout the season. Their consistency and strategic play led them to the top of the table, securing the championship with 70 points from 38 matches, showcasing a strong attack with 56 goals scored and a robust defence conceding only 33 goals. This victory adds to the illustrious history of the club, winning their 8th league title and reaffirming their status as one of Nigeria’s top premier football teams.

RELEGATION HEARTBREAK: SPORTING LAGOS

In a dramatic turn of events, Sporting Lagos faced relegation after just one season in the top flight. Their fate was sealed following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Shooting Stars. Despite their efforts throughout the season, they ended up with 46 points, which was not enough to keep them in the NPFL. The relegation is a significant setback for the club, which will now have to regroup and aim for promotion next season.

MID-TABLE STABILITY: SUNSHINE STARS

Sunshine Stars finished the season in mid-table, securing their NPFL status for another year. Although they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Niger Tornadoes in their final match, their recent impressive performances ensured they accumulated enough points to avoid relegation. This outcome was crucial for the Akure-based club, allowing them to continue competing at the top level of Nigerian football.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Remo Stars and Enyimba also had commendable seasons, finishing second and third respectively. Remo Stars accumulated 65 points, while Enyimba gathered 63 points, both displaying strong competitive spirit and tactical prowess.

Shooting Stars not only contributed to Sporting Lagos’s relegation but also had a solid season themselves, finishing in the upper half of the table with 62 points.

Kano Pillars, Abia Warriors, and Kwara United managed to maintain their positions in the league, each club navigating the challenges of the season with resilience.

BOTTOM OF THE TABLE

The teams that finished at the bottom of the table included:

Gombe United with only 25 points, facing relegation after a tough season.

Heartland with 38 points, who struggled to find form throughout the campaign.

Doma United and Sporting Lagos, both relegated with 44 and 46 points respectively.

AWARDEES OF THE NPFL SEASON

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: GBOLAGADE ADELOWO

Gbolagade Adelowo of Shooting Stars Sport Club (3SC) was honoured with the NPFL Player of the Season award. His outstanding performances throughout the season were pivotal in his team’s successes, earning him this prestigious accolade.

GOLDEN BOOT WINNER: MBAOMA CHIDIOKE

Mbaoma Chidioke claimed the golden boot after an impressive season with Enyimba FC, scoring 17 goals. His prolific goal-scoring abilities were crucial for his club, securing him the top scorer title for the season.

BEST GOALKEEPER: AMAS OBASOGIE

Bendel Insurance FC’s Amas Obasogie finished the 2023/24 NPFL season as the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets. Obasogie kept 18 clean sheets in his 35 appearances, setting a new league record for the most clean sheets in a single season. His exceptional goalkeeping skills played a significant role in his team’s defensive stability.

TOP ASSIST PROVIDER: SODIQ ISMAIL

Sodiq Ismail of Remo Stars concluded the 2023/24 NPFL season as the top assist provider for the second consecutive year. He contributed significantly to his team’s attacking play, ending the campaign with 14 goal contributions, which included 1 goal and 13 assists. Ismail’s vision and playmaking abilities were instrumental in creating numerous scoring opportunities for his teammates.

CONCLUSION

The 2023/2024 NPFL season was a testament to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of Nigerian football. From the crowning of Rangers International FC as champions to the relegation battles faced by teams like Sporting Lagos, the season provided fans with memorable moments and intense competition. As clubs now prepare for the next season, the achievements and lessons from this campaign will undoubtedly shape their strategies and ambitions going forward.
