Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission Plans Relocation Of Departments Despite N70 Billion Abuja Headquarters

The Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has announced plans to move certain departments and units from Abuja to Lagos, despite investing N70 billion in constructing a new headquarters in the capital city.

This decision, outlined in a memo titled “Movement to Lagos” and signed by Executive Commissioner Kelechi Onyeakachi Ofoegbu, aims to enhance service delivery, reduce operational costs, and optimise asset utilisation in Lagos.

The circular, dated February 14, states that the relocation initiative aligns with the organization’s goals of improving efficiency and managing office accommodations. Departments are urged to identify units capable of independent operation with minimal supervision by February 23, 2024.

However, insider sources have expressed concerns about potential disruptions in service delivery and staff productivity due to the directive.





They suggest that the move is linked to the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act and the consolidation of operations. Notably, the construction of a new headquarters in Abuja, nearing completion at 80%, has already seen significant investment, following the relocation of NUPRC HQ to Abuja in December 2020 based on presidential directives.
