A joint operation by the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) and Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ochabrigade) led to the successful rescue of a kidnapped victim in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State, over the weekend.
According to a report by the Southeast Zonal Commander of the NHFSS, ACG Mark Okem Okonkwo, the incident occurred while Catholic church parishes in the Nimo community were holding prayers for the departed. During this time, kidnappers targeted and abducted Chukwunonso Nzekwe, a building engineer originally from Attani Achi in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, who resides in Asaba, Delta State.
The kidnappers took Nzekwe to a remote location in Agu Urukwelora village, Egbengwu Ojideleke, Nimo. Fortunately, a vigilant NHFSS intelligence officer in the village spotted the kidnappers in the bush. This officer alerted ACH Innocent Obinyeluaku, a retired Superintendent of Police, who swiftly mobilised a team. In the ensuing confrontation, one of the kidnappers, identified as Sunday Samela from Nasarawa State, was apprehended, while his accomplices managed to escape after a series of intense gun battles. A locally made gun was recovered from the scene.
The rescued victim was safely handed over to the police for further investigation at the Rapid Response section in Awkuzu. Additionally, he was taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awkuzu, to provide a formal statement.
Despite ongoing challenges in the Nimo community, officers of the NHFSS have remained resolute in their mission to maintain security, especially as the year-end approaches, a period often marked by heightened criminal activity. Commander Okonkwo appealed to the public for continued cooperation, urging residents to report suspicious activities promptly.
Expressing gratitude to the rescue team, NHFSS Deputy Commander-General (Intelligence), Amb. Dr. John Metchie, praised their courage and commitment. Metchie reaffirmed the NHFSS’s dedication to safeguarding Anambra’s forests from criminal threats. He also applauded the collaboration with Ochabrigade and commended Commander-General Amb. Dr. Joshua Osatimehin for his leadership in transforming the hunters’ service.
The success of this operation reflects the effective partnership between NHFSS, Ochabrigade, and the broader efforts of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo in ensuring the security of Anambra State, allowing its residents to rest peacefully.
